Rebuild

Sometimes you need to follow your own advice...

Keep things simple and validate your backups. The SSD boot drive went to silicon heaven and I've just finished rebuilding the stupid computer again. I had moved the user profiles off of the SSD to save some space and the backup couldn't get them for some reason. SIDs probably. Without the profiles, it's no use restoring the bugger.

So after a couple of days, 125 GB of programs and the a 58% defrag rate after all the installs, it's finally done. See you on the seas soon, after I take a good backup...

I try to keep the installed stuff to a minimum. You would have heard howls of anguish if one of the data volumes tanked. Those are backed up to the NAS which has it's own backup. It's amazing how much junk one can collect over the years. Those volumes are clean. Of course, I have 2 new 1.5TB drives sitting in the safe now. Nothing like an outage to make one crazy.

I lost a HDD 5 years ago with all my music. Photos and documents were backed up to CD but it was still a pain.
Ever since I keep a full backup on a USB drive (currently 2TB in the PC, 2TB backup). Plus a DVD backup of photos and other irreplaceable files.

Good luck on the restore.
