Just another example of british ingenuity and genious...
His recent movie Kingdom of Heaven, in my eyes beats the ever popular Gladiator.
So my question is, what other movies has he done (i can't log on imdb :()?

I was really disappointed in KoH. :( Some of the visuals were good but Gladiator was far, far superior imvho. I thought the dialog was poor, the story telling weak and for me Orlando Bloom is just not a "hero" type, he's more a pretty boy.

Im sorry but ill have to concur, I was feverently looking forward to Kingdom of Heaven as the previews looked stunning. It was a boring aloofish film that started good but fell flat on its face.
The battle scene in the beginning, in the woods really set a great pace but after that it was dull. Middle Eastern Battles felt either skipped or rushed along. And please, with that little speech by Orlando "Arise A Knight!!!" almost had me in tears of how bad that acting was. I wish for god sake someone could get their act together and make a great historical war epic and quit dropping lumps of crap on me....
Kingdom of Heaven, Alexander, Windtalkers, Troy.............
Capt Wentworth

..and lets not forget Harry Gregson-Williams who wrote the awesome score for it (Kingdom of Heaven that is) :P

I also must add that his newest load of fecal matter, Domino is much worse. Dont see it if you value $8 bucks at all. He needs to lay off Pirates of the Carribean actors I guess, I think he curses them.

My favorite Ridley Scott film is his first, The Duellists.
Also, the movie Domino is directed by Tony Scott, not Ridley

Have to be Blade Runner for me. Although the best bit of the film was written by Rutger Hauer. You have to see the directors cut though. The original film spells it out for you and like Donnie Darko it's better when you have to work things out yourself. The directors cut doesn't have the voice over, leaving you to think about things.
Blackhawk Down is another excellent film because it doesn't dilute the theme of the film. It's pure combat, no love interest, no moral backdrop, just historical information and combat. Master and commander was very much the same, it presented a accurate historical view of life on a ship and didn't fill it with sub plots and romance.
Gladiator and Troy were good films, but they don’t stand up to repeat viewing. It strange but I can watch 13th Warrior again and again, but didn’t enjoy Braveheart the second time round.

I agree Blade Runner was by far his best film although Gladiator comes a close second, i cant comment on KoH I never got to see it however I have heard it is not as good as Gladiator

I agree to an extent with Fletcher. Blade Runner was superb and maybe just edges Black Hawk Down into 1st place then Gladiator (which I'd put head and shoulders above Troy incidentally). Don't forget the original Alien film either - classic stuff.

hmm well... I know I am putting my head on the block, but I really like KoH alot.. I think it is great.. I think the battles that are, is really great, I like the way the King and Saladin has a friendship.. I really like the Hospitaler, he is awesome. no stones please, use only vegetables at me, thank you...
I have to say Gladiator is my favourite by his, truly a master peice in modern cinema history.

There is someone who has been cuirously quiet for a while now (Mr. Cameron, that is). The last I heard, when he went to see Lord of the Rings he got very anxious to do a new film, though word on what he is putting together is a tight secret (I guess the new CGI they used must be pretty exciting stuff for a director - certainly made a great movie!)
Capt Wentworth
17-10-05, 16:36
whatever it is he's doing I'm sure it'll be worth the wait :) if he's got excited over something then lord knows what hights he'll drive it to to get an effect he wants...looking forward to hearing what he is working on... : :D

Agreed on Kingdom of Heaven. So many movies set in that era are campy, this was a great movie because of its tone and realism.
Andromeda Strain huh? Interesting that they are breaking that old property out again. I can just picture some producers sitting around watching the news saying "Avian Flu in Romania...hmm...hey we have that property sitting around somewhere, get it on screen fast" Ever notice how when one asterioid movie comes out another follows right after. Same with volcanoes and coring to the center of the earth. We're in for a slew of virus movies now. Mark my words. Its a conspiracy I tell you.

Not a conspiracy sir, buisness. ;)

Personally, I enjoyed the music of Gladiator more.
Captain 'Lazarus' Vernon
18-10-05, 11:41
Really? I thought the music from KOH was a bit, un-heard, and in that sense refreshing. I liked it because it was a mix of the usual heroic up-lifting tones and a bit relaxed middle-eastern style... And I thouroughly enjoyed it.

Mr Zimmermans score to Black Hawk Down is definitely one of my favorites.
Captain Palafox
18-10-05, 13:27
Hmmm,. While I did enjoy kingdom of heaven, I thought Ibelin was too much a modern man for that era. He did not seem like a medieval character with the mindset of medieval man. Men need to take charge and be responsible, not let bad things because he does not want the responsibility. I also did not like that the Templars were portrayed the way they were. I liked Saladin most of all, but he was the only one that had a part on his side.

I'm right with you sir, it made the film sound different - rather than another US 'ye olde spoof' .... the same guy got the Harry Potter contract as well (which would've resulted in a vastly different tone for the film) but the esteemed Mr John Williams complained...good job they let him keep Shrek tho. :) Mr Gregson-Williams has now truly arrived in the film world i believe, and i can't wait for his next scores... :D
Captain 'Lazarus' Vernon

@Palafox: His name was Godfrey, he was the baron of Ibelin, or maybe your talking about Balian, which wouldn't make sense.

I realize this is a huge bump, but... The Director's Cut of KoH came out in may, and I jsut got my hands on it. It's amazing, I have no doubt this will be a Bladerunner scenario. (Crap in theatres, huge with cult status)
It's so good, I just can't... Explain....

I love that movie.... I just cant watch the directors cut. For me, removing the Ford voiceover totally destroyed (as in trampled, stomped on and beat with an iron pipe) the film noir quality of the theater release. I love the old Raymond Chandler style detective stories and movies, and recreating that feel in a sci fi setting was a delicate thing to do as well as it did.
Captain 'Lazarus' Vernon
28-03-06, 21:09
No no, I agree that BladeRunner was better with Ford's voice overs, I'm saying that Kingdom of Heavon Directors Cut just came out, and it's awesome.

Its been on my list of things to see for some time now. The man has talent, thats certain - he has an eye for a great visual that doesnt rely on special effects or any gimmickry.

Doh! It appears the Directors Cut does not come out until May of THIS year. What I revieved I guess is a simple extended edition. I don't know how I thought it came out last May, but.. I guess I let my love for this movie get the best of me. However, I am anticipation the real thing quite heavily :)

This is my favorite genre of movie. My only complaint with KoH was Orlando Bloom.
He just doesnt have the presence or charisma for such a role, imo. Other than that, loved everything about the movie.
